Scientists have made several recent attempts tobuild a better lithium ion battery.
In a traditional battery, these poles are solid.
In the University of Illinois' battery, these poles have been redesigned to be fast-charging porous three-dimensional microstructures.
It also means that the battery can charge up to 1,000 times faster than competing technologies.
They’re not quite ready for the market just yet, though.
But the development could mean interesting things for the future.
“It’s a new enabling technology.
It’s not a progressive improvement over previous technologies; it breaks the normal paradigms of energy sources.
It’s allowing us to do different, new things.”
